The workshop featured presentations on the safe utilization of next-generation energy carriers, including hydrogen and ammonia, and provided a valuable platform for academic exchange between Japan and Norway.

The presentations covered a broad range of topics related to hydrogen and ammonia technologies, with a particular focus on safety issues associated with their transportation, storage, and utilization. Speakers introduced current challenges and research efforts aimed at supporting the wider deployment of these emerging energy systems.

In the maritime sector, discussions highlighted safety concerns associated with hydrogen- and ammonia-fueled vessels, including fire and explosion hazards, toxic gas releases, and the challenges of evacuation and emergency response at sea. Participants also learned about recent advances in hydrogen safety research, including hazard assessment methodologies, hydrogen leakage and combustion experiments, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based consequence analyses.

The workshop emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach that integrates experimental research, numerical simulations, risk assessment, and sensing technologies to support the safe implementation of next-generation energy systems. Through active discussions among participants, the event fostered deeper understanding and strengthened international collaboration in the field of energy safety.

Technical Visit to Tokyo Gas Yokohama Techno Station

On October 14, participants visited the Tokyo Gas Yokohama Techno Station. During the visit, they learned about Tokyo Gas’s initiatives toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and toured a methanation demonstration facility.

The visit provided students with an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the practical implementation of next-generation energy technologies. The lively question-and-answer sessions reflected the participants’ strong interest in the technological, environmental, and societal challenges associated with the global energy transition.

On October 13, 2026, the H2 Industry Norway-Japan Workshop 2026 in Japan was held at Yokohama National University, bringing together researchers and students from Yokohama National University (YNU) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
